hiking in shoulder season and snow

How snow changes local trails and which hikes stay low.

Snow can sit on North Shore trails above roughly the ski-area elevations from late fall well into spring, and on Sea-to-Sky alpine routes into July. A trail that is easy in August can be dangerous in May.

what changes

  • Trails disappear under snow, and fog makes route-finding hard.
  • Snow slopes and gullies can be avalanche terrain. Check Avalanche Canada.
  • Days are short. Carry a headlamp.
  • Microspikes help on ice but do not make steep snow safe.

good to know cam

Hi, I'm Cam Appleton. I love Vancouver and I love getting out on its trails. When I went looking for a simple, easy hiking guide for around here, I couldn't find one I liked. I also really like helping people, so I built this one.

My day job is real estate. I help people buy, sell and lease. I hope you're enjoying the start of Hike Vancouver. I wrote these guides the way I'd explain things to a friend at the trailhead.
