hiking with kids around vancouver

Picking trails, pacing and safety for family hikes.

For kids, pick short trails with a clear payoff such as a lake, waterfall or beach, plan for about half your usual pace, and keep children close near cliffs, canyons and fast water.

tips

  • Choose a trail under two hours with little climbing to start.
  • Give each child a whistle and teach them to "hug a tree" and blow it if lost, as AdventureSmart's Hug-a-Tree program teaches.
  • Bring snacks, layers and dry socks.
  • Turn around while everyone is still having fun.

good to know cam

Hi, I'm Cam Appleton. I love Vancouver and I love getting out on its trails. When I went looking for a simple, easy hiking guide for around here, I couldn't find one I liked. I also really like helping people, so I built this one.

My day job is real estate. I help people buy, sell and lease. I hope you're enjoying the start of Hike Vancouver. I wrote these guides the way I'd explain things to a friend at the trailhead.
